Another week, another leak. From Windows 7's internal builds to Hollywood blockbusters (like X-Men Origins:Wolverine), seems everything's poised to appear on the net before official availability.
The Sims 3 was among the most anticipated games for 2009. After having gone gold a few days ago, reports indicate it's now been leaked onto filesharing networks, 2 weeks before it is available in retail. From comments on the gaming sites covering the news, the 5 gigabytes download reported seems is indeed real, and people already are playing The Sims 3.
This comes after news that Electronic Arts wouldnt' use restrictive DRM for the retail release (use of Securom on last year's hit Spore had its piracy rate gone through the roofs, with its listings on Amazon buried under universally negative customer reviews).
From EA's Rod Humble:
While the game itself wont apparently require online authentication, the installer is reported to ping the mothership at initialization.

Quote
"The game will have disc-based copy protection — there is a Serial Code just like The Sims 2. To play the game there will not be any online authentication needed. We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future."

I am willing to bet the leak will only provoke corporate shills to use the piracy excuse for poor sales, instead of it being another lame rehash of essentially the same boring game. This will in turn lead to even more invasive drm in future titles thus causing even more piracy and the cycle continues.

You mean people actually care about the sims enough to want it before the release date? Shocking.
50% of them are only doing it so they can use nude/sex hacks. Eww...

Exactly, I could give a hoot less about the sims. The Sims have never interested me, not even Sim City has garnered any interest with me.
