Seems OnLive's still around. Quick summary about what it is about:

Quote

The concept is remarkably simple. The actual hardware generating the visuals and running the gameplay isn't owned by you. Instead it's held somewhere else in the world. That hardware then encodes its visual output and beams it to you over the internet. The player sitting at home simply uses an existing PC or Mac (or 'micro-console') to take the video stream over IP, beaming back control inputs to the server. The advantages are very straightforward - you don't need to upgrade your hardware, the people running the servers do. And that hardware can be state-of-the-art PC kit way in advance of what Xbox 360 or PS3 are capable of, and of course it's upgradable. You'll never need to buy a game again; you'll just rent time on the ones you want to play. You'll doubtless save money and the publishers will make more of it. Piracy will be impossible.

OnLive goes into public beta testing News | PC | Eurogamer

Quote

OnLive founder Steve Perlman has announcedthat the ambitious "cloud" gaming service, which runs games remotely and streams the video to your home over the internet, is ready to begin public beta testing.

OnLive has started sending out invites to people who've registered for the beta, and registration is still openMy link. However, you need to be resident in the US and aged 18 or over to be eligible. Initial testing will be done through PCs and Macs.

Perlman says testing will be done across a wide range of locations, internet speeds, broadband services, computer hardware, displays and input devices to make sure OnLive works in as many different situations as possible.

Our own Richard Leadbetter disputed that OnLive could work as promised when it was revealed at the Game Developers Conference in March this year, prompting a rebuttalfrom Perlman. So it will be interesting to see how the service peforms in the real world, to say the least.

So any more news about this yet, has it been tested on normal home network connections yet? I'm sure the fail will be imminent once this is tested on a normal much slower home internet connection, I can't even see Fios as being sufficient for something of this magnitude. :o

If Google buys that thing, I'd predict quite a success, especially for Chrome OS. Only an organistation of the scale of Google could have that work well enough, IMO.

They had a press event since that time I think. Other than obvious traditional shortcomings of realtime video transmission and short display and input lag, its been "okay". Even if it doesnt work for actual gaming, it could work well for online game tournaments coverage (but with local and owned infrastructure, instead of ISP-operated), as itd apparently be possible to instantly view any single shared session being played that moment.

Yeah, that's about the only thing I'd see this being useful for as normal home internet connections just aren't sufficient enough and most homes in the USA don't have access to true broadband internet. This is especially true for those in rural areas outside of cities and towns.

Check the preview, or beta-review: OnLive Game Service Preview @ PC Perspective. I remember it had videos and other pics. Then, had to blur the pics... now it seems the pics are back, good.

Wow interesting, but there is still a bit of difference between playing it locally and playing on the Onlive service and it requires a decent high speed internet connection. I'm willing to bet it would require no less than a fast connection through Time Warner Cable, Verizon Fios or similar.

The lag was expected, since is too far away from the server. OnLive will have several severs to avoid long distances to the users.

Thus, it will be a US-only thing. And even then, only for those close to a server. Other than that, it seems to be a pretty decent service. Specially nice, since it would allow even netbook users to play some games.

I read the review in the link but I'm not exactly sure how much lag it was, I read the part where his friend didn't notice the difference so I presume it was almost like running it locally so long as you have a good internet connection.

Judging by your post it sounds like a lot of lag. :P
